We urgently need your help to stop a dangerous union of pro-nuclear bills that threatens to keep U.S. taxpayers on the hook for the full costs of nuclear disasters, undermines our health and safety, exacerbates environmental injustices, compromises the climate, and promotes nuclear energy worldwide. S. 1111 and H.R. 6544 represent a comprehensive pro-nuclear agenda that includes a range of provisions that prop up and promote the nuclear industry.
The provisions included in these bills would exacerbate the radioactive waste crisis and squander federal dollars on nuclear development. However, the most alarming aspects are provisions that would undercut nuclear safety regulations in the U.S., while “exporting” nuclear power plants around the world.
Congress already pushed through a key provision of these bills by including it in the major federal budget bill in March: a 40-year extension of the Price-Anderson Act -- a 1957 law that caps the nuclear industry’s liability for disasters at a mere $16 billion. This means that taxpayers would be left to bear the brunt of the full costs of nuclear disasters, which could soar into the hundreds of billions of dollars. Big Nuclear’s backers in Congress are now trying to pass all of the other harmful parts of those bills. Altogether, they would be even more harmful than the Price-Anderson Act, by undermining nuclear safety standards, promoting construction of more and more reactors in the U.S. and other countries, and blocking the transition to renewable energy that is essential to preserving a livable climate.
It's imperative that we make our voices heard and let our Senators and Representatives know that the union of bills S. 1111 and H.R. 6544 is detrimental to U.S. taxpayers and perpetuates the status quo of dirty, dangerous, and expensive nuclear power. Please take a moment to contact your Congress member and urge them to oppose the union of bills S. 1111 and H.R. 6544.
