Please honor the commitments the Biden administration has made to environmental and climate justice and ensure that federal investments in clean energy do not include subsidies to aging, uneconomical, and unjust nuclear reactors. As Congress negotiates a climate package, it is critical that this package does not waste billions of dollars on bailouts to corrupt nuclear corporations. Please ensure that the Nuclear Production Credit (Nuclear PTC), allocating tens of billions of dollars ($35.3 billion over 6 years according to the latest analysis) in infrastructure spending on subsidies for aging, uneconomical nuclear power plants, is NOT included in the climate package. The Nuclear PTC would needlessly duplicate the Civil Nuclear Credit from the BIF and would be a costly, counterproductive, job-killing mistake. The sponsors and proponents of the Nuclear PTC would hinder essential climate action and economic justice in favor of corrupt subsidies for dirty, old, and increasingly dangerous nuclear power plants. Preserving the bailout for nuclear reactors instead of investing in real climate solutions that support communities, green jobs, and future generations is a massive waste of resources and political will. Please do not allow short-sighted and corrupt interests and the inadequate status quo to prevail. Ensure that infrastructure and energy legislation include no subsidies for nuclear power, and focus all energy investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and the transition to a 100% renewable, carbon-free, nuclear-free energy system.
