Congress and the White House are proposing a massive national bailout for the nuclear power industry — up to $50 billion over the next decade. This would undercut the principal goals of President Biden’s American Jobs and Families Plan: to create millions of quality jobs rebuilding our country’s infrastructure, powering the country with 100% clean energy by 2035, and building a just and equitable economic recovery.
So, why are members of Congress pushing so hard to give a slate of old, uneconomical nuclear power plants so much money out of a large, but still limited, budget for energy investments needed for a just transition to a carbon-free future?
Follow the money and the answer is revealing. Nearly the entire $50 billion would go to just eight corporations across eight states. Worse, $30 billion of the federal nuclear subsidy would go to two companies that are the subject of federal corruption cases over state-level nuclear subsidy laws.
Short-sighted corporate interests must not block our path towards a liveable, just, and equitable future. President Biden and Congressional leaders should not risk the American Jobs and Families Plan being derailed over corporate corruption cases. The infrastructure bills will do more for climate, jobs, and justice without a nuclear bailout, and by investing in the transition to 100% renewable energy.
Tell President Biden, Vice-President Harris, and your representatives in Congress: “No Corrupt Nuclear Bailouts in the American Jobs and Families Plan – Invest in American Jobs and a Just Transition to 100% Renewable Energy by 2035”
