Subject: Don’t Sacrifice 60,000 Green Jobs to a Corporate Nuclear Bailout!

Message:

As a July 2021 report (https://bit.ly/3iQUs9G) shows, the best investments to reduce emissions are the same in the short-term, medium-term, and long-term: solar, wind, efficiency, and storage. They are affordable, rapidly deployed, and job-intensive. Yet there are proposals to allocate $10-$50 billion of infrastructure spending on subsidies for aging, uneconomical nuclear power plants. This would be a costly, counterproductive, job-killing mistake, and I urge you to oppose all such measures in both the bipartisan infrastructure bill and bills proposed to be included in the American Jobs and Families Plan (H.R. 4024/S.2291). Even a $50 billion nuclear bailout will not create a single job. The proposed subsidies would go to aging, uneconomical reactors that cannot compete with renewable energy, energy efficiency, electricity storage, and other modern, affordable, innovative, carbon-free resources. These nuclear plants are already decades old, with a shrinking workforce. Subsidizing them will not create any additional jobs. Nuclear bailouts would block tens of thousands of new jobs from being created. If $50 billion were invested in renewable energy instead of a nuclear bailout, it would create 67,000 jobs. That would be enough to keep all nuclear workers employed AND provide quality employment for 50,000 more people than the subsidized nuclear reactors employ. There are better alternatives to maximize employment, clean energy, and emissions reductions. That starts with the opportunity created by decommissioning nuclear reactors, which can keep at least half of the workers on the job for 10-20 years. The nuclear industry already has more than $60 billion set aside in decommissioning trust funds, collected from ratepayers. Those funds can employ nuclear workers and help communities transition, at no cost to taxpayers. The choice to spend up to $50 billion bailing out nuclear power would sacrifice the opportunity to create quality, family-sustaining jobs for at least 60,000 more Americans. We can keep nuclear workers employed, help their communities transition, and accelerate the clean energy economy with more jobs and lower electricity costs. Investing the full energy budget in renewables, efficiency, storage, and modernizing the grid will create 60,000 more jobs in the new, clean energy economy. Please ensure that infrastructure and energy legislation include no subsidies for nuclear power, and focus all energy investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and the transition to a 100% renewable, carbon-free, nuclear-free energy system.
