Subject: Don’t Waste Time and Money for Jobs and Climate on Nuclear Energy

Message:

Please ensure that infrastructure and energy legislation includes no subsidies for nuclear power, and focus all energy investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and the transition to a 100% renewable, carbon-free, nuclear-free energy system. We need the multi-trillion-dollar investment you have proposed to transform our energy economy, transportation systems, workplace standards, and social programs. But dirty energy interests do not want that to happen. The nuclear industry is pushing proposals to allocate over $50 billion of infrastructure spending on subsidies for aging, uneconomical nuclear power plants, and on speculative new nuclear technologies that cannot help us reduce greenhouse emissions. This would be a costly, counterproductive mistake, and I urge you to work with Congress to prevent all such measures in both the bipartisan infrastructure bill and bills proposed to be included in the American Jobs and Families Plan (including H.R. 4024/S.2291). As a July 2021 report (https://bit.ly/3iQUs9G) shows, the best investments to reduce emissions are the same in the short-term, medium-term, and long-term: solar, wind, efficiency, and storage. They are affordable, rapidly deployed, and job-intensive. Expanding renewables and efficiency is far cheaper than subsidizing old reactors, and would create at least 60,000 more family-sustaining jobs. We cannot miss that opportunity. Investing in new nuclear technologies is just as fool-hardy. Utilities that invested in new reactors over the last decade still have nothing to show for it, even with billions of dollars in federal financing and incentives. Had they invested in renewables and efficiency instead, they would have already reduced emissions more than the nuclear projects ever could have, at lower costs to their customers. Today, there are no approved designs ready to deploy at scale in the next 20 years, much less by 2030--the most critical decade for climate action. We absolutely need a massive effort to transform our energy system and our economy--to build a more just, equitable, and sustainable country. To do that, we need to put our money where our mouth is. The scale of investment you have proposed is essential. But wasting money on nuclear energy will only slow us down and get in the way. Do not let Congress repeat the mistakes of the past. Please ensure the infrastructure legislation and the American Jobs and Families Plan move us to carbon-free, nuclear-free, 100% renewable energy.
