Tell the White House and Congress:

No Nuclear Bailouts in Clean Energy Plans

Proposals from the White House and Congress would invest up to $50 billion dollars in subsidies for aging, uneconomical nuclear power plants over the next decade. The Biden Administration’s infrastructure bill is our chance to take real, effective action on climate, economic renewal, and a just future. These nuclear bailouts would perpetuate environmental injustices while blocking effective progress towards climate action. We can’t let the nuclear industry block actual climate solutions, economic prosperity, and justice to subsidize the dirty, unjust, and corrupt energy systems of the status quo.

Our leaders need to hear from us: We want a clean, renewable energy future and the jobs that come with it. Tell them to STOP bailing out a failing, dirty, crooked industry that poisons our environment and vulnerable communities and start investing in a safe, healthy, sustainable American future.

As a July 2021 report (https://bit.ly/3iQUs9G) shows, the best investments to reduce emissions are the same in the short-term, medium-term, and long-term: solar, wind, efficiency, and storage. They are affordable, rapidly deployed, and job-intensive. <br><br>Yet there are proposals to allocate $10-$50 billion of infrastructure spending on subsidies for aging, uneconomical nuclear power plants. This would be a costly, counterproductive, job-killing mistake, and I urge you to oppose all such measures in both the bipartisan infrastructure bill and bills (H.R. 4024/S.2291) proposed to be included in the American Jobs and Families Plan. <br><br>Subsidizing aging, increasingly uneconomical nuclear reactors will also cost tens of thousands of jobs from the American Jobs Plan. Investing in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and modernizing our electricity infrastructure will produce several times more jobs than in the entire nuclear industry, at a lower cost to consumers. The nuclear industry is already sitting on more than $60 billion in trust funds to employ its workers in decommissioning and cleaning up reactors when they close. By investing in renewables to replace old, uneconomical reactors that are at the end of their useful lives, and using decommissioning funds to keep nuclear workers employed in cleaning up nuclear sites, we could create tens of thousands more jobs.<br><br>Nuclear power has no place in a “clean” energy standard (CES). Nuclear power is dirty energy, from start to finish. From uranium mining, milling, and enrichment, to radioactive emissions and nuclear waste, it produces vast amounts of pollution for which there is no solution. Throughout that process, pollution and health impacts are systematically and disproportionately visited on Indigenous peoples, Black and Latino communities, and poor, rural communities. <br><br>We must ensure that the nation’s goal is 100% renewable energy by 2035 – fossil fuel-free and nuclear-free. The American Jobs Plan will produce more jobs, more justice, more economic opportunity, and greater emissions reductions. But not if it becomes a bailout for dirty, dangerous, unjust, uneconomical nuclear power.
