Subject: Oppose and Remove Nuclear Subsidies from the BBBA

Message:

With the full passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Plan and the recent, historic passage of the Build Back Better Act in the House of Representatives, I am pleased to see progress being made towards the just and renewable energy future we need and deserve. However, I am very disappointed that the BIF includes billions of dollars for nuclear power, both in the form of tax credits for existing nuclear reactors and in funds for research and development. These nuclear subsidies are blocking investments in climate action and perpetuating injustices waged against Black, Indigenous, Latino/a/x, poor, and otherwise marginalized communities (as noted by the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council). As the BBBA moves to the Senate, I urge you to make sure the bill is truly the game-changer we need to transition the country to renewable energy and off of fossil fuels by 2035. I am concerned that the Build Back Better Act includes tens of billions of dollars (over $35 billion in latest estimates) in infrastructure spending on subsidies for aging, uneconomical nuclear power plants - the same plants that benefit from the Civil Nuclear Credit passed in the BIF. Passing the Nuclear PTC into law as part of the BBBA would be a redundant, costly, counterproductive, job-killing mistake. Please oppose and remove all such measures in the Build Back Better Act. Preserving the bailout for nuclear reactors would sacrifice the opportunity to create the social and infrastructure programs the nation needs. Forgoing family-sustaining jobs and investments in racial justice to bail out corrupt nuclear corporations that are already receiving bailouts would be a tragic waste of resources and political will. With a large amount of the Nuclear PTC subsidy accruing to two companies that are the subject of federal corruption cases over state-level nuclear subsidy laws, this could become an even larger scandal. The infrastructure bill will do far more for climate, jobs, and justice without a nuclear bailout. Please ensure that infrastructure and energy legislation includes no subsidies for nuclear power, and focus all energy investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and the transition to a 100% renewable, carbon-free, nuclear-free energy system.

The infrastructure bill will enable Build Back Better to truly live up to its name and do far more for climate, jobs, and justice without a nuclear bailout.
