Take Action! Don't let a dirty nuclear bailout slip into a clean energy bill!

Members of the Massachusetts legislature have added language to the draft climate bill (H.4503) that would include nuclear power in the definition of “clean energy.” We are asking you to tell them loud and clear how wrong it is to attach the word “clean” to “nuclear power.” Scientifically and ethically WRONG.

This bill authorizes subsidies to the Seabrook (NH) and Millstone (CT) nuclear power plants, for up to 30 years. Contracts have to be “cost-effective,” but that criterion is not clearly defined - a wide-open door to justify the bailout of these aging nukes on the basis of jobs, property taxes, GHG emissions, or any other alleged public good under the state’s purview.

Legislators are looking for an easy way to meet the state’s clean energy goals while ignoring the elephant in the room -- the high-level waste stranded at the six reactor sites that are in Massachusetts or close to its borders, with no solution in sight.

We can and must do better than directing money to a failed industry and away from renewables.

We are asking that you call or write the following three legislators as well as your own representatives and senators to let them know that nuclear must not ever be in the mix of the energy we need to mitigate climate change. Remove both fission and fusion from H.4503 and any other climate bills!

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the inclusion of nuclear power in the definition of “clean energy” within the draft climate bill (H.4503). Labeling nuclear power as “clean” is scientifically and ethically incorrect. The bill authorizes subsidies for the aging, uncompetitive Seabrook (NH) and Millstone (CT) nuclear power plants, through 15- to 30-year-long contracts. These measures would divert crucial resources from truly clean and renewable energy solutions. Nuclear power is polluting dirty energy, and can never qualify as “clean energy generation.” The ongoing fight to stop the dumping of radioactive waste at the shuttered Pilgrim reactor into Cape Cod Bay and the continued storage of nuclear waste at reactor sites surrounding our state make it crystal clear that nuclear power is polluting and a proven danger to the Commonwealth. The entire nuclear fuel chain pollutes our environment and entails widespread environmental injustices, from the mining of uranium for nuclear fuel to the toxic cornucopia of radioactive wastes that reactors produce. Additionally, the undefined “cost-effective” criterion could be misused to justify these bailouts on various grounds, undermining genuine efforts to combat climate change. Massachusetts must focus on sustainable and renewable energy sources, not on a failed, dirty, and dangerous industry. I urge you to remove nuclear power from the bill and direct our resources toward a genuinely clean, renewable, and safe energy future. Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.
