Holtec International, the firm responsible for decommissioning the Indian Point nuclear power plant, has stated that it will resume discharging radioactive wastewater into the Hudson River. Legislation introduced (S6893/A7208) by state Senator Pete Harckharm and Assemblymember Dana Levenberg, with the support of a growing list of co-sponsors, will put a stop to any planned discharge into the Hudson River.

The contaminated wastewater must be securely stored on the Indian Point site while methods to isolate it are evaluated. It’s time to draw the line against using the Hudson as a dumping ground for tritium, a radioactive isotope present in the wastewater. Ingestion of tritium is linked to cancer, and children and pregnant women are most vulnerable.

Message:

Dear Governor Hochul, I oppose radioactive waste dumping into the Hudson River from the closed Indian Point Nuclear Power Reactors. I ask you as governor to do all you can to prevent this deliberate, unnecessary radioactive contamination of one of our state’s major water resources. Please immediately sign S6839/A7208 when it arrives on your desk and work to require waste management to isolate, not intentionally disperse, nuclear waste. Holtec, the company decommissioning Indian Point plans to dump a million gallons of radioactive, tritiated wastewater—and no estimate of the amount of radioactivity—into the Hudson River despite the consequences on Hudson River communities, drinking water, recreation, businesses and more. Please assert our state’s rights and do not permit this unnecessary action driven by the company’s efforts to keep decommissioning funds for their own gain at the expense of New York State communities, residents and businesses.
