The notion that nuclear power is “clean” could not be further from the truth. Idahoans know firsthand: nuclear waste contaminates precious air, land, and water forever.

For decades, Idaho has been burdened by the dirty realities of the nuclear industry. This attempt to define nuclear power as "clean" is greenwashing and opens the door for state funding to dirty energy projects, rather than investments in the real solutions to affordable, clean power: renewable energy and efficiency.

Please vote "No" on any Senate companion bills to HB 96, a bill that strikes the word “renewable” and adds nuclear power to the list of “clean” energy sources considered by the Idaho Energy Resources Authority. We need renewable, sustainable energy and increased efficiency in our state, not dirty, dangerous, expensive and slow nuclear power. The notion that nuclear power is “clean” could not be further from the truth. Idahoans know firsthand: nuclear waste contaminates precious air, land, and water forever. For decades, Idaho has been burdened by the dirty realities of the nuclear industry. Vast amounts of radioactive waste have transformed Idaho’s Arco desert into a waste dump. This nuclear waste, including the partially melted core from the Three Mile Island disaster, is stored above the Snake River Aquifer, risking radioactive contamination of the sole source of drinking water for over 300,000 Idahoans and a vital resource for Idaho's agricultural sector. We don’t need nuclear power to fight climate change or to keep the lights on. Idaho Power plans to make Idaho carbon free by 2045 without a single watt nuclear power. Ratepayers will be better off without notoriously expensive and behind-schedule nuclear power. So too will Idaho’s environment. The attempt to define nuclear power as "clean" is greenwashing and opens the door for state funding to dirty energy projects, rather than investments in the real solutions to affordable, clean power: renewable energy and efficiency. Please reject HB 96 and any Senate companion bills. Thank you.
